Trumpets, trombones, saxes, flutes, clarinets, vibraphone:

• Know major scales through 3 sharps and 3 flats, and full range chromatic scale.
• Prepare an etude, preferably jazz.
• For advanced placement, prepare a jazz tune with improvisation; bring your accompanying CD.

Piano:

• Play a song that you have prepared (preferably jazz). Improvise in the right hand while comping in the left hand to a blues in Bb or F.
• Sight-read a simple melody with chords.
• For advanced placement, prepare a jazz tune with improvisation; we will have a professional drummer and bass player accompany you.  Please bring a copy of your music.

Bass, guitar:

• Sight-read chord changes with appropriate style.
• For advanced placement, prepare a jazz tune with improvisation; bring your accompanying CD.

Drums:

• Play various styles at various tempi with steady time.
• Be able to change to half time and double time.
• We will have a professional pianist and bass player accompany you.

To be considered for an advanced placement combo, you should:

• know all 12 major scales.
• prepare an improvised tune (bring the accompanying CD to the audition).
• sight-read changes to a tune.
